Xbox's Disc-to-Digital Feature Has a Clever Hidden Trick

Xbox just rolled its disc-to-digital program out to Xbox Insiders, and testers found something the official notes didn't fully spell out: you can digitize Xbox Series X games using nothing but an Xbox One.

Here's the trick. Xbox One consoles can't physically read Series X discs — different format, different requirements. But when you pop a Series X disc into an Xbox One's drive, the console still recognizes what the disc is, even though it can't play it. A warning pops up saying the game isn't compatible. Close that warning, dig into the options menu, and select "claim digital license." Boom — the game gets tied to your account as a digital copy, no Series X required.

Why this loophole actually matters

On paper, disc-to-digital programs exist so people can clear out shelf space and go all-digital without repurchasing games they already own.
