Cloud Goes to Bat for Pagliocca

Right after the season-ending loss, Cloud made a point of publicly praising GM Jeff Pagliocca, crediting him for assembling a roster that had real questions marks around chemistry and talent fit heading into the year. Her argument: injuries, not roster construction, were the real culprit. She specifically said that with full health, this Sky team looks like a top-five playoff squad instead of a lottery team watching the postseason from home.

That's a notable thing for a veteran player to say out loud to media, especially with speculation swirling about what changes are coming. By backing Pagliocca directly, Cloud is also indirectly protecting head coach Tyler Marsh, since Pagliocca was instrumental in bringing Marsh on board in the first place.

Where Does That Leave Marsh?

Here's the tension: Cloud has defended Marsh before, saying back in August that a second-year coach inheriting a struggling franchise deserves grace and time to build something sustainable. But grace only stretches so far in a league where results matter fast, and two seasons without sniffing the playoffs is a rough resume entry no matter the roster context.

The timing doesn't help either. Late September is prime season for WNBA teams to make coaching changes, and the Sky aren't operating in a vacuum — the Los Angeles Sparks already moved on from Lynne Roberts around the same stretch, a reminder that patience for underperforming coaches is thin across the league right now.

The Bigger Picture for Chicago

The Sky are in a strange spot. They have a player willing to publicly vouch for management and coaching, injuries that legitimately hurt their case, and a front office that invested real belief in this current setup. But belief and results are two different things, and ownership will have to decide whether three straight missed postseasons is a pattern worth breaking with a bigger shake-up, or a blip explained away by health.
